Overview :

The National Institute of Education (NIE) in Sri Lanka is the leading institution responsible for guiding the development of general education in the country. As mandated by the NIE Act, No. 28 of 1985, the institute’s Department of Teacher Education offers education degrees and postgraduate programs. In 1991, NIE introduced the Bachelor of Education (BEd) degree in response to the growing demand for skilled and knowledgeable teachers. This program aims to produce teachers who are not only academically proficient but also well-versed in effective teaching methodologies and educational principles, thus contributing to the improvement of the national education system.

Initially, the BEd program focused on a limited set of subjects like primary education and social science. However, over time, the curriculum has been revised and expanded to better meet the evolving needs of the education system. The revised curriculum now allows teachers who previously completed diploma-level training to pursue a degree in their chosen subject areas, as well as those who entered the profession without a teaching diploma but possess G.C.E. A/L qualifications or teacher training certificates. The current BEd (Honors) Degree Program (2022-2025) is being updated to align with the Sri Lanka Qualification Framework (SLQF), offering 120 credits across various specialized tracks.

Calling for Applications from National Diploma in Teaching Holders

Applications are invited from National Diploma in Teaching candidates of the National College of Education  for the above-mentioned Bachelor of Education Honors Degree  Programme conducted by the National Institute of Education

01. Nature of Course

1.1  This Bachelor of Education Honours  Degree programme consists of 120 credits. (60 Credits are exempted for diploma holders  of National College of Education)

1.2  This course is part-time and conducted on weekends and school holidays, and also educational activities through online and face to face sessions will be conducted through regional learning centers.

1.3  The course will be conducted in English medium for teachers  appointed to teach English in school.

02. Eligibility for Apply

2.1.  National Diploma in Teaching from National Colleges of Education. 

         As well as having  passed the G.C.E. (A/L) examination.

 2.2.  On  10.12.2024, Being permanently appointed and currently serving in any of the Sri

     Lanka Teacher Service, Sri Lanka Principal Service, Sri Lanka Teacher Advisor Service,

     Sri Lanka Education Administration Service and Sri Lanka Teacher Educator Service.

 03. Selection of Candidates

Candidates will be selected for the degree programme on the basis of interviews. During this, priority will be given to the period of service.
